Tax Manager
Role Overview / Purpose
The Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the timely and accurate submission of all SARS-related tax filings for this company’s clients. This role is critical in managing tax compliance processes, primarily for companies and trusts, with some individual tax submissions as well.
The Tax Manager will work closely with internal departments, reviewing and submitting tax returns while ensuring strict adherence to tax deadlines and statutory requirements. Additionally, the Tax Manager is responsible for reporting on tax compliance performance to other departments, continuously improving internal processes, and leading the tax team toward greater efficiency.
Over time, this role offers an opportunity for the Tax Manager to expand into tax advisory and consulting services while training and mentoring the Tax Administrator to eventually take on greater responsibilities.

- 100% compliance with SARS tax submission deadlines across all clients.
- Accurate and timely reporting on tax compliance status to internal stakeholders.
- Process and workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in tax submissions.
- Development and mentorship of the Tax Administrator, ensuring knowledge transfer and succession planning.
Key Responsibilities1. SARS Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee the review and submission of company Corporate Income Tax (including Provisional Tax) returns for approximately 400 clients.
- Ensure individual tax calculations are performed within the tax team before submission.
- Manage, oversee, and submit other ad hoc SARS submissions, depending on client needs.
2. SARS Engagement & Dispute Resolution
- Manage SARS correspondence, ensuring queries, objections, and audits are handled effectively.
- Represent clients in SARS audits and reviews to minimize risk and ensure compliance.
- Liaise with SARS to resolve disputes and negotiate settlements where necessary.
3. Process Improvement & Risk Management
- Continuously refine and improve tax compliance workflows, ensuring efficiency in handling high volumes.
- Implement best practices to improve accuracy and reduce compliance risks.
- Work with internal teams to enhance tax reporting and submission tracking.
4. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and mentor the Tax Administrator, ensuring they develop the skills needed to handle growing responsibilities.
5. Reporting & Internal Coordination
- Maintain accurate tax compliance tracking and provide regular reporting to other departments on submission status.
- Ensure clear communication of tax deadlines and compliance risks to relevant internal teams.
- Identify trends and potential issues in tax compliance and escalate as needed.
Qualifications & Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, or a related field (e.g., BCom Tax/Accounting).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in tax compliance, including company, trust, and individual tax submissions.
- Registered as a Tax Practitioner.
- Experience in calculating and reviewing income tax calculations and SARS submissions.
- Proven ability to manage tax compliance for a high volume of clients (ideally 300+).
Competencies (Technical Skills & Software)
- Proficiency in SARS eFiling and tax return submissions.
- Strong knowledge of tax regulations, including VAT, Corporate Tax, PAYE, and Provisional Tax.
- Experience with tax risk management and dispute resolution with SARS.
- Ability to implement workflow improvements and automation for efficiency.
- Knowledge of financial reporting standards related to tax.
- Experience with GreatSoft software is preferred.
