POSITION INFO:
The Strawberry Grower is responsible for producing high-quality fruit by determining and implementing the best growth strategies per crop type and field to achieve optimal productivity levels. The role requires a focus on perfection and continuous improvement in cultivation practices.
Responsibilities:
- Fertigation and Irrigation: Manage fertigation and irrigation schedules according to the specific needs of each crop and field.
- Labour Management: Plan, assign, orientate, and monitor labour to ensure tasks are completed within deadlines, maintaining high production and quality standards.
- Procurement: Source all necessary materials and equipment within set timelines to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Maintenance: Establish and execute a maintenance plan for all equipment to avoid service disruptions.
- Husbandry Strategy: Plan, coordinate, monitor, and adjust husbandry practices for each crop and field based on plant growth indicators.
- Cropping System: Determine the appropriate cropping system for each day and crop.
- Tunnel Operations and Maintenance: Manage tunnel operations and maintenance according to the strategic plan for climate control in each field.
- Climate Management: Adjust tunnel management activities according to climatic changes, such as venting and deventing.
- Pest Control: Monitor fields and develop a spray programme to minimise pest infestations.
- Service Procurement: Engage services within relevant departments to meet specific deadlines and outcomes.
- Biological Pest and Disease Control: Implement and monitor biological measures for pest and disease control.
- Pollination Strategy: Develop, implement, and monitor effective pollination strategies per field and crop, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
- Field Maintenance: Develop, implement, and monitor a field maintenance programme to ensure neat and orderly blocks.
Candidate Requirements:
- Educational Background: B.Sc/M.Sc in Agriculture or Horticulture, or equivalent diploma/degree.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in growing soft fruit or production; young and energetic candidates are preferred.
- Skills:
- Good literacy, numeracy, and computer skills.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- Analytical thinking.
- Other Requirements:
- Valid driving licence with own transport.
