BACKGROUND
- The job title of the successful incumbent will be dependent on skills, experience and professional registration.
- The incumbent will be located in Cape Town.
SKILLs & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- BSc / BTech / BEng Tech in Civil engineering.
- Active registration with ECSA as a candidate engineer/ technologist, with a willingness to learn and eligibility to obtain professional registration within the next 1-2 years (non-senior).
- Professional registration as a Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng with ECSA (senior).
- Minimum 3-8 years’ post graduate experience, specifically in the civil consulting engineering industry.
- Strong foundational technical skills in civil engineering, with a focus on road construction and infrastructure projects.
- Exposure to construction monitoring and basic contract administration of gravel and surfaced roads is advantageous.
- Familiarity with NEC, FIDIC, JBCC, or GCC contracts is beneficial but not essential; willingness to learn is required.
- An understanding of tender processes, contract documentation, and claims handling will be advantageous.
- Willingness to develop expertise in South African construction law and contract regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and MS Project.
- Exposure to contract management tools is advantageous.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills to interact with contractors, clients, and team members.
- Ability to learn and apply negotiation and dispute resolution skills under guidance.
- Ability to work independently, but also as part of a dynamic team as a co-operative, collaborative and supportive team player.
- Accuracy in work, with attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Proactive time management skills with a willingness to take on tasks independently.
- Good writing skills.
- Showing development of good leadership skills (non-senior only).
- Excellent leadership skills (Senior only).
- Staff management experience is compulsory for senior staff and advantageous for non-senior staff.
- Valid South African driver’s license (minimum Code B).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to travel locally and in Africa for extended periods of time as and when required.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support senior team members in planning, design, and implementation of road infrastructure projects.
- Construction monitoring and contract administration activities, including documenting site progress and contractor performance (non-senior will assist).
- Preparation of Tender and Quotation Documentation (non-senior will assist).
- Compilation of Engineer’s estimate of costs (non-senior will assist).
- Preparation for and presentation at Contractor’s briefing meetings and issuing minutes of such meetings (non-senior will assist).
- Compilation and issuance of Addenda to Tender Documentation and Tender Evaluation Reports (non-senior will assist).
- Construction monitoring and implementation of site construction work as and when required, on a part-time or full-time basis.
- Contract administration during construction and close out phases of projects.
- Procure professional sub service providers and management thereof.
- Compilation and/or review close out reports (non-senior will assist).
- Review as-built data and drawings.
- Contractual claims and disputes (non-senior will assist).
- Keep abreast with technology development and research in the field of construction materials, mix designs, seal designs and construction methodology.
- Co-ordinate and supervise the production of site designs and reporting inputs by supporting staff.
- Assist with Client liaison, including meetings and reporting.
- Regular liaison and reporting to Executive Manager: Transportation – Cape Town and Division Head: Transportation.
- Manage the technical outputs of direct reports (senior).
- Management, supervision, mentoring and coaching (senior).
- Compliance with and managing direct reports (if applicable) compliance with the company’s Quality Management System (ISO9001:2015) Business Management System (BMS) and the Project Management Online Guide (PMOG).
- Preparation of requests for proposals, expressions of interests, panel applications and tenders and generate work for the Company (non-senior will assist).
- Management of projects and monitoring of performance and profitability (non-senior will assist).
- Register as a candidate with ECSA to ensure advancement towards registration as a Professional Engineer / Technologist within 1-2 years (non-senior).
- Complete and submit monthly blueprint reports as per annual calendar (non-senior).
- Participate in professional organisations for marketing, industry recognition and networking.
- Assist in marketing and business development initiatives (non will assist).
- Perform research and write technical papers for publication or presentation at industry related conferences.
- Maintain regular and continued professional development through on the job training, in-house courses, seminars or outsourced specialist training as required and as agreed with the designated Executive Manager or other Responsible Persons.
Achievement of objectives will be measured and reviewed during the annual staff appraisal.
