Safety Officer – Solar Plant Installation (De Aar) (6 month contract)

SUMMARY:
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Safety Officer to oversee the health and safety compliance of a solar plant installation project in De Aar, South Africa. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by implementing and enforcing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with local safety regulations.
 
Key Responsibilities: 

• Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures in compliance with South African regulations (OHSA, SANS, and other applicable standards).
• Conduct site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify potential hazards.
• Ensure all employees and contractors adhere to safety protocols and use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Investigate and report accidents, incidents, and near misses, and implement corrective actions.
• Conduct regular safety training, toolbox talks, and induction sessions for site personnel.
• Work closely with site managers, engineers, and contractors to ensure safety measures are integrated into daily operations.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations for renewable energy projects.
• Prepare and submit safety reports, maintaining accurate records of inspections, incidents, and training.
• Liaise with local authorities, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies on safety matters.
• Promote a strong safety culture across the workforce.

• Relevant diploma/degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
• Registered with SACPCMP as a Safety Officer (advantageous).
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a safety role within the mining, construction or renewable energy sector.
• Strong knowledge of South African safety legislation, ISO standards, and best practices for solar installations.
• Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and site audits.
• Ability to deliver safety training and awareness programs.
• Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-risk environment.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to remote sites.

• Experience working on large-scale solar or renewable energy projects.
• Knowledge of environmental compliance and sustainability standards.
• First Aid & Firefighting Certification is an advantage.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
