POSITION INFO:
The following position is currently available at Sernick Beef Abattoir in Kroonstad.
Position reports directly to the General Manager: Sernick Beef.
SAFETY, HEALTH, QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENT MANAGER
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree or Diploma related to Health and Safety Management.
- At least five years management experience in a FMCG production environment as Health and Safety/Quality/Environmental Manager.
- Knowledge of working in a food processing environment and food safety systems
- Must have organisational and people management skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English
- Must be able to sort out problems pertaining to food safety, as well as OHS, quality and the environment.
- Computer literate to at least intermediate level (Windows, MS Word and Excel)
- Due to operational requirements the willingness to work outside of normal working hours, on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.
- Valid driver’s license and own reliable transportation as the position require occasional travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage a team of Quality Controllers.
- Report, log, investigate and resolve non-conformances and customer complaints
- Ensure all relevant inspections and checklists are completed on time.
- Inspect data on checklists and ensure non-conformances are logged.
- Ensure all checklists on file.
- Ensure equipment and dilution rates are verified and calibrated, in writing, as specified in the procedures (i.e. Thermometers, Scales, Cleaning Chemicals, etc.)
- General walk-throughs and inspections in plant – ensure procedures are followed throughout the abattoir production environment and relevant departments outside the production environment. I.e. taking temperature readings at freezers outside the abattoir
- Ensure employees abide by the Policies and Procedures of the Company.
- Assist with all Food Safety investigations, complete investigations and report to the General Manager.
- Assist by ensuring Legal Compliance within the System (i.e. Meat Safety Act).
- Educate employees on all relevant Policies and Procedures.
- Responsible for induction of new employments.
- Conduct Toolbox Talks on Occupational Safety as well as Food Safety Talks.
- Responsible for compliance of Microbiological Sampling Plan – Samples send to External SANAS Accredited Laboratory
- Responsible for maintenance issues to be reported to the Maintenance Manager.
- Responsible and accountable for all Internal and External Audits in terms of all applicable legislation.
- Responsible to conduct traceability process and record keeping
- General administrative and detailed record keeping duties as required
- Responsible to report all non-conformances immediately to the General Manager, with full details and statements.
- All duties as per Occupational Health & Safety Manager appointment.
