About the Role
A leading multi-disciplinary engineering and consultancy firm is seeking a Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Specialist to join their team in Johannesburg, with project work across various sites. This role is pivotal in ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of all project stakeholders by implementing comprehensive OHS strategies during the design, construction, and post-construction phases of infrastructure projects.
As an OHS Specialist, you will oversee risk assessment, safety program development, incident investigation, and compliance monitoring while collaborating with diverse teams to deliver world-class engineering solutions across water, roads, stormwater, and sewer reticulation systems.
Key Responsibilities:

Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification: Identify potential hazards and assess risks associated with civil infrastructure projects to ensure proactive mitigation measures.

Safety Program Development & Implementation: Develop, implement, and oversee tailored safety programs that promote a culture of health and safety compliance.

Incident Investigation & Corrective Action: Lead thorough investigations into workplace incidents, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.

Compliance Monitoring & Auditing: Ensure strict adherence to applicable legislation, industry standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and ISO standards).

Training & Education: Deliver health and safety training programs to project teams, ensuring continuous awareness and understanding of OHS protocols.

Ergonomics Evaluation & Employee Health Monitoring: Conduct ergonomics assessments and implement measures to protect employee health and well-being.

Emergency Preparedness & Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans to ensure effective handling of emergencies and minimize operational disruptions.

Data Analysis & Reporting: Monitor safety performance, analyze trends, and prepare detailed OHS reports for management and stakeholders.

Client Interface & Stakeholder Communication: Engage with clients, regulatory authorities, and project teams to promote safety excellence and maintain compliance.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications:

Master’s Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent.

SACPCMP Registration as a Professional Construction HSE Agent during the design phase.

SACPCMP Registration as a Professional Construction HSE Agent or Manager during the construction phase.
-
Registered with Environmental Assessment Practitioners of South Africa (EAPASA) or equivalent.
Experience & Skills:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in OHS management within construction and civil infrastructure environments.

Strong knowledge of contract management frameworks, including FIDIC, GCC, JBCC, and NEC3.

Proven expertise in the implementation of civil infrastructure projects (roads, stormwater, and other related systems).

Exposure to client interfacing, project planning, and health & safety compliance.

Ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and develop safety protocols.

Exceptional conflict resolution, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
-
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with expertise in preparing detailed technical reports.

Experience dealing with National Roads Services.

Successful experience in proposal writing, marketing, and public presentations.
