Goede Hoop Citrus (Pty) Ltd is located in Citrusdal, Western Cape. The town is 178km from Cape Town alongside the N7 national road to Namibia. It lies between the Cedarberg mountains in the east and the Olifants River mountains in the west. The company was formed in 1926 and has provided a packing and marketing service to the Citrus producers within the Western Cape for nearly a century.
The Goede Hoop Citrus board consists of six producers’ directors, two executive directors, one employee trust director and two directors appointed by the board. The role of a Non-Executive Director (NED) is to monitor executive decisions while remaining independent of the business & its day-to-day operations, and maintaining a high degree of understanding of the business. The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months.
The main responsibilities of the NED Marketing Director will include:
- Effectively monitoring the performance of the management team and especially the Citrus marketing team
- Challenging and contributing to the overall strategy and specifically the marketing strategy development of the company
- Ensuring that controls are in place; risks are managed effectively; and that financial reporting is accurate
- Mentoring and providing guidance to the senior management team and the board on brand loyalty and confidence, corporate governance, and seasonal marketing plans
The ideal non-executive candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Relevant postgraduate qualification(s)
- Minimum of 15 years of fruit exporting business experience, with at least 10 of these years in a senior marketing fruit exporting role (preference will be given to candidates with citrus and grape experience)
- Well-developed critical thinking ability
- The capability to encourage contributions from fellow directors, while also challenging direction and asking probing questions
- A team builder who is empathetic and effective in interpersonal communication
- Strong track record in strategic planning, developing and servicing European and United Kingdom retail programmes and primary producer level engagement initiatives
- Excellent relationship-building skills with existing connections within South Africa and the South African primary exporting countries
- A balance of conceptual thinking, analytical ability, risk management, strategic planning and commercial acumen is essential
