A SQL (pronounced as “ess-cue-el”) developer is someone who analyses and designs applications that interface with the database computer language SQL (Structured Query Language).

While specific duties may vary, the main requirement of an SQL developer is to create, update and improve a database to suit a business’ needs. These databases are then checked to establish their reliability to run on systems. They are also required to write and test code within a database.

Responsibilities of a SQL Developer

• Design, develop and maintain SQL applications/ETL, databases, reports and programmes
• Create, document and implement test plans
• Set up and maintain automated SQL scheduled tasks
• Investigate and provide support to the business regarding all data related issues
• Designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable code
• Set up automated processes, when required, for handover to the Deployment team
• Document current or new processes
• Ensure the best possible performance and maintain the quality and responsiveness of applications
• Perform data analysis – write relational and multi-dimensional database queries
• Handle escalations from the business

SQL Developer Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in IT
• ITIL Foundation Certificate
• MS SQL Certifications beneficial
• Excellent knowledge of database architecture and design
• Excellent MS SQL DB & T-SQL knowledge is essential
• Knowledge of SSIS, SSRS and data warehousing 

Skills

• Minimum 3 years experience in SQL development
• Must have experience with SQL queries, stored procedures, functions and triggers
• Experience in data warehousing and analytics
