An Oracle Developer is a developer who builds applications and programs that interact with an Oracle Database. Oracle developers in business intelligence design, develop and integrate technology to mine data and provide reports across an enterprise. These professionals use business intelligence tools, such as dashboards or scorecards to provide decision support. Their work is not only in analysing, gathering, managing and integrating data but also in creating new ways of analysing data that can generate actionable information. They are often the first step in automating business processes.

Oracle Developer Job Overview

Oracle developers design, build and implement computer systems to store and retrieve data to and from databases. In addition to designing, building and testing database systems, they must troubleshoot problems in existing systems and create solutions to improve efficiency and performance. They also work directly with clients to help them understand and use the database system.

Responsibilities of a Oracle Developer

  • Troubleshooting and debugging applications
  • Enhancing applications by identifying opportunities for improvement, making recommendations and designing solutions
  • Writing clean code to develop functional software applications
  • Conducting functional and non-functional testing
  • Provide technical assistance to other Developers as needed.
  • Develop Oracle reports, database procedures and UNIX shell scripts.
  • Modify existing codes to optimise Oracle applications.
  • Making recommendations and designing solutions, and staying up to date on new trends in technology.

Oracle Developer Skills & Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems is a prerequisite. However, many other skill sets in software development are necessary to become an Oracle Developer.

Some prior knowledge of database management is required Understand Structured Query Language (SQL), which is used to access and manipulate data in a database.

Have a good understanding of application programming interfaces (APIs), which allow applications to communicate with each other. Other skills include:

  • Java Programming – Java is one of the most popular coding languages used by developers today
  • Unix Shell Scripting – Unix is the operating system on which many Oracle databases run, and Shell Scripting automates many functions on a Unix machine
  • PL/SQL – PL/SQL stands for Procedural Language/Structured Query Language, and it adds procedural statements to SQL
  • HTML – HyperText Markup Language is the language behind web pages and web applications
  • XML – Extensible Markup Language allows different types of data to be exchanged
