Civil Technologist Job Overview

Civil technologists are responsible for evaluating the structural integrity of buildings and other structures. They perform tests on existing structures to determine whether they are safe and sound or need repairs or replacement. Civil technologists also design new structures and evaluate their safety during construction.

Responsibilities of a Civil Technologist

Civil technologists typically do the following:
  • Review plans for buildings and other structures to ensure they meet safety regulations and building codes
  • Inspect sites to ensure that all necessary permits are obtained
  • Monitor the progress of construction during each phase
  • Provide technical support when needed by project managers during phases of construction
  • Plan and designing new infrastructure projects
  • Analyse existing infrastructure to identify repair or replacement needs
  • Develop cost estimates for proposed projects
  • Assess environmental impact of proposed projects

Civil Technologist Skills & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required for this position. The student should have completed courses in surveying, soils, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and design, transportation engineering and traffic control, water resources management and environmental engineering.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Civil technologists must be able to work well with others to complete projects on time and within budget. They must be able to communicate effectively with clients and co-workers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong computer skills are needed because they will be working with computers to collect data and create maps that visualise the results of their work. They also need to have knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) software programs so they can use those programs to create maps showing the results of their studies or research projects.
  • Ability to think critically is essential.

Civil technologists must have a thorough understanding of physics and mathematics, as well as an ability to read blueprints and interpret building codes. They also need good interpersonal skills, because they work closely with architects, engineers and builders.
